About Family Sponsorship

Moving to a new country can be challenging, especially when it means leaving family members behind. Canada’s Family Sponsorship program is designed to help reunite families, allowing Canadian citizens and permanent residents to bring their loved ones to Canada to live, work, and study permanently. Under this program, family members who gain permanent residency no longer require a visitor visa or a letter of invitation.

Who Can be Sponsored

Eligible family members you can sponsor include:

Spouse or common-law partner
Dependent children
Parents and grandparents

As a sponsor, you must be at least 18 years old, a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, and meet specific financial requirements. The sponsor commits to supporting their family member financially, ensuring they can settle successfully in Canada. This includes signing an undertaking agreement—a legal commitment to provide financial support to the sponsored person if necessary.

Financial Responsibility: Sponsors must meet a minimum income requirement, proving they can support the family member they are bringing to Canada.
Eligibility: Sponsors must reside in Canada and cannot be receiving social assistance (except for disability). Sponsors must also meet age and residency requirements.
Commitment to Support: By sponsoring a family member, you agree to financially support them for a specified period, depending on the relationship (e.g., three years for spouses, up to ten years for parents or grandparents).

Tax Receipts: Note that family sponsorship does not qualify for a tax deduction.
Special Situations: There are unique guidelines for sponsoring children born outside of Canada and specific considerations around surrogacy and immigration.
