About PTE

The full form of PTE is the Pearson Test of English, a test designed to assess a student’s level of English proficiency. To be accepted into foreign institutions or colleges where English is the primary language of communication, students must pass this test. Countries such as Canada, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK typically require a PTE scorecard for admission.

PTE Test Format

The PTE test evaluates a candidate’s abilities across four key areas: Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening.

There are two modules of the PTE test:

  • PTE Academic – For Student Visas and Immigration
  • UK Government Tests – PTE Academic UKVI (Study & Work) and PTE Home (Live – Citizenship)

Key Details about the PTE:

  • It is an online exam lasting two hours, with results available in 5 working days.
  • The exam is available every day (except Sunday) with three slots per day.
  • PTE scores are valid for 2 years.
  • PTE scores range from 10 to 90 bands (for both individual modules and the overall score).
  • There is no limit on the number of attempts.
  • Score cards can only be viewed, downloaded, or sent using the user ID and password.
  • The most recent score is used for admission (not the highest score).

In this module of the PTE test, the candidate's English speaking ability is assessed. Each test is recorded by the test center.

In this section, a candidate’s ability to address the task effectively is assessed, with a focus on using a wide range of vocabulary and grammar.

The writing tasks in the Academic module differ from those in the General module.

The Reading section assesses the ability to read for the main idea, identify key details, skim effectively, understand logical arguments, and recognize the writer’s opinions, attitudes, and purpose.

The test includes three lengthy passages sourced from journals, magazines, and books. These passages are intended for individuals planning to pursue higher education abroad.
